moving into place. that's coming up. new this morning, firefighters still on the scene of a fire this morning. ktvu's alex savage on the scene. >> reporter: good morning. we are learning this is a home less encampment on fire. it's near the park. if you have been out near this area, it's nearby great highway and balboa street. you can see the firefighters peg out the hot spot ins the area. there was a fair amount of trees in the area where the encampment is. as we pan to the left, about three homes were threatened. we will show you where the firefighters are putting out the fire. the fire broke out on a piece of private property and this

has been a long time problem, this home less encampment. there have been apparently three fire ins the past nine months. >> there's been a problem with the home less people getting in the area. fire started this morning, went undetectived for a while until seen by the garbage company. the fire get into the juniper trees which take off easily. >> reporter: the flames looked pretty large when the fire firefighters got on the scene, but thankfully, they got it under control and they are making sure the fire is out in the area. steep terrain in the area. the fire is in a home less area

that was threatening homes. a big crash is blocking all traffic in the richmond area this morning. the crash is at the central off ramp off i-80. the driver of the big rig swerved to avoid a car and crashed into a guardrail. fuel and oil spilled all over and several vehicles were damage inside the area. or night, a woman was taken to the hospital after a duiment accident. the injured was a passenger in the car. a cal tran employee saw the

event and called for help. >> one of the supervisors saw the accident. it is inauguration weekend and the president is started it off with a day of service. the president and his family are volunteering today. vice president and his wife are doing the same. the president started this as start of his first inauguration. one of the local events is a blanket drive for the homeless. you can drop off blankets from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. later today, the 14th annual

martin luther king stop the violence event will be held. president obama will be sworn in in adrift event tomorrow. the constitution requires the event to happen on the 20th, but since that starts on a sunday, an event will happen on monday so the americans can watch the ceremony. dc police swore in extra police yesterday. some will provide security for the event and others at the ball. devante brown was invited to attend the events. he is a member of the national honor society and several other clubs. he tutors other students and soon, he will see the president

mark udof is stepping down from the system in august. he has health issues. he has held the post for many years and is planning to return to teach law. no word on his replacement: more freshmen are applying to college. according to the uc campuses, an increase of 10.7%. also, latino applicants are the largest group of freshmen applicants. at uc berkley, more than 67,000

for boeing. now, one of the run ways at the san francisco national airport is closed today for construction. sfo will only be able to handle about half of the 60 flights an hour. the biggest impact will be on passengers flying within a two hour radious of the area. there is good news for the passengers concerned about privacy. body scanners showing a nude impage will no longer be used. sfo stopped using the full body scanners about two years ago. tsa is saying that full body scanners should be removed by june from oakland. a skier buried by an

a day to give back, the national event that has people all over the bay area volunteering in their communities. happening now, the president is kick off his weekend with volunteer work. president obama started the event four years ago to honor dr. martin luther king jr. there are events in washington and in the bay area. we'll have more coming up in about half an hour. as part of the national day of service, there is a blanket drive for the homeless. you can drop off the blankets from 9:00 this morning until 6:00 tonight. in his weekly address, president obama called on

congress to pass legislation to stop shootings like the one in connecticut. >> ask your member of congress if they support the ban, and if the answer is no, ask them why not? >> this week, the president asked congress to begin the background checks on the weapons. supporters and opponents of the plan are gearing up for a fight in congress. dozens of groups say they are planning on rallying. more than 100 people turned out for a meeting in connecticut to decide the fate of the school.

of his first inauguration. here at home, volunteers are helping out for the national day of service and one of the biggest projects is in daily city. alex has more. >> reporter: in just a little while from now, volunteers will be putting the finishing touches on the condominium complex here on mission road. they are working on the 36 unit complex right now to get this ready. this is going to be an affordable housing complex for people to move into later on this year. apparently, this is one of the largest habitat for humanity projects. >> it's true. this is one of the biggest in the u.s. we are taking the bay

area spirit and work on this project for 36 families. typically, we build houses for single families. this is different. 90% of the labor is done with volunteers and it's remarkable we are able to accomplish that. >> and on this national day of service, you have all of the volunteer spots filled. >> we do, but we will need roughly 50 volunteers a day on the other projects. >> reporter: for someone who has never volunteered for a project like this, what does it do for you? >> it's a remarkable opportunity to swing a hammer and do some construction. when you walk away, you leave behind something that is

if you can believe that. you can see these volunteers pitching in. these volunteers signed in about a half an hour. they will be doing a lot of the finishing touches like painting and doors and landscaping. this will provide affordable housing for many in the bay area. habitat for humanity started this project in 2010. >> i am just like excited to see it done and i am so happy that these people are going to get the places they are going to get and i am thankful for all of the people work on this site. >> reporter: so, at this point, they have 1200 volunteers -- 100 volunteers on the site, and that's really all of the volunteers they need today.
